General Assistance

General Assistance is a program that provides assistance for basic needs for eligible applicants who can not provide for themselves and their families. General Assistance provides “a specific amount and type of aid for defined needs during a limited period of time and is not intended to be a continuing “grant-in-aid” or “categorical” welfare program” (4301(5)).

Residents of the town who are having difficulty meeting basic needs such as housing, utilities (electricity and heating fuel), and food may complete a General Assistance Application.

Applications can be mailed to:

Greenville Town Office
PO Box 1109
Greenville, ME 04441

Persons who wish to apply for General Assistance may do so at the Greenville Town Office during the following times:
Tuesday through Thursday
9am – 2pm

People are encouraged to call 207-695-2421 and make an appointment with the General Assistance Director.
If the Director is not available at the call, a message should be left. The Director will return the call as soon as possible.

IF IT IS AN EMERGENCY DURING NON-BUSINESS HOURS, CALL 800-432-7372 (PISCATAQUIS COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPT.) TO GET A MESSAGE TO THE GENERAL ASSISTANCE DIRECTOR.

General Assistance is intended to provide immediate aid within 24 hours of an application for people who are unable to to provide for themselves or their families with basic necessities (food, shelter, utilities, clothing, fuel and other items). The Select Board of the Town of Greenville has adopted an Ordinance establishing the General Assistance Program pursuant to Title 22 MRSA Section 4305.
